@PumpUpThaVolume! Episode023 - The Measure was pre-recorded at the hometown studios of MediaMonarchy.com and features brand new #SongOfTheDay sounds from Helio Sequence, Bob Mould, Easy Star All Stars, Lord Huron, The Sea And Cake, The Grates, Aimee Mann, Fergus & Geronimo, Pony Trash and Corin Tucker Band... because it can't be news and politics all the time!
Previous: Episode022 - Holiday
♬Liner Notes♬: This week's episode is shorter than most due to so many repeats from our #SongOfTheDay sources - which is fine with me for two reasons: I'd love to keep these episodes under an hour AND I'm in my hometown of Fayetteville, West Virginia. Unfortunately, MusicFestNW has kicked off and I'm missing it - worst of all was missing Sloan due to my new job... But enough about me, let's talk about new music from Aimee Mann, The Sea And Cake, Bob Mould and more. Let's start with Portland's own Helio Sequence and Pump Up Tha Volume!
Sub Pop, 2012
Note: Song source KCRW says about Portland, Oregon's own: "The course of Helio Sequence's fifth album, Negotiations, was diverted by a flood in their studio space. Luckily, they were on tour and had their best equipment with them so they decided to use the opportunity as inspiration to do something different. You can hear it on reverb-heavy shimmery songs like... "The Measure."" We heard the song "October", also from 'Negotiations', on Episode019 - Apocalypse Dreams. The Helio Sequence are playing their hometown this week as part of Portland's premiere music festival, MusicFestNW.
Note: With an A- rating, The Onion's AV Club says, "Every 10 years, Bob Mould morphs. In 1982, his first band, melodic punk legend Hüsker Dü, issued its debut full-length, Land Speed Record. In 1992, Mould’s far more radio-friendly outfit, Sugar, released its debut, Copper Blue. Then, in 2002, Mould dropped two electronic-based albums, Modulate and Long Playing Grooves... Mould’s new solo album, Silver Age, comes at the cusp of another 10-year period. But rather than turning into something new, it settles into some comforting old sounds. Comforting, however, does not equate with laid-back." I vividly remember seeing those videos from Sugar's Copper Blue play on MTV's 120 Minutes alongside videos from The Shamen, Morrissey, The Charlatans and more. That was then...
Easy Star All Stars
"The Girl Is Mine" (w/ Mojo Morgan)
Easy Star, 2012
Note: The New Zealand Herald breaks it down: "Nearly 10 years ago, New York outfit the Easy Star All Stars decided to turn Pink Floyd's entire album Dark Side Of The Moon into a reggae album. Since then, in among their original releases, the All Stars have also tackled Radiohead and The Beatles (they clearly don't shy away from classic, much loved albums), and this year they've gone for Michael Jackson's Thriller. With 21 instrumentalists, plus guest vocalists in the crew, it's an album with a rich tapestry of sounds, and a polished, carefully thought-through endeavor."
"Ends of the Earth"
Note: Paste Magazine says: "After producing two EPs and touring tirelessly, Lord Huron has announced its first full-length album, Lonesome Dreams." Song source KCRW says: "Rising LA band Lord Huron will release its full-length debut, Lonesome Dreams, in October. Today's Top Tune is a preview, enjoy the invigorating harmonies and lush melodies on "Ends of the Earth.""
The Sea And Cake
"On And On"
Thrill Jockey, 2012
Note: KEXP gives us "On And On", the lead track on the latest release from Chicago's chill pop masters. Pitchfork notes: "On September 18, the Sea and Cake will follow up last year's mini-album The Moonlight Butterfly with a new full-length called Runner, out on Thrill Jockey. That's the album cover above. The first single's called "Harps", which you can stream above. A long tour in support of the new record begins in October-."
"Turn Me On"
Note: Reviewed Music writes: "From the outset of opening track and lead single ‘Turn Me On’, it’s fairly evident that Secret Rituals is a different album from The Grates. This is not the bombastic sugar rush of a single that we’ve come to associate with the Brisbane act over the years. This single, and entire album – their third – is the product of a subtly different band."
Note: VVN says: "This is her eighth studio album and first since 2008’s Smilers and Mann says the sound is influenced by what she calls the super-pop of the 70s and 80s. In the main though, it does not steer wildly away from her recent albums... Charmer will please existing fans, but probably won’t attract a new following, which is a shame because amongst the wealth of female talent out there, Mann stands out as having far more interesting things to say."
Fergus & Geronimo
'Funky Was The State Of Affairs'
Hardly Art, 2012
Note: Stereogum notes: "Chugging Texan garage-poppers Fergus & Geronimo have just announced that they’ll release their sophomore album, the awesomely titled Funky Was The State Of Affairs, later this year. And below, we’ve got a download of the catchy, punny, sneeringly brief album track “Roman Tick.”"
"Down To The River"
'Pony Trash' EP
Old Blackberry Way, 2012
Note: Song source The Current from Minneapolis Public Radio writes that this hometown band gives us "our second taste from their forthcoming self-titled EP. No release date or show set just yet, but they’ll be unleashing stream-only versions of each song on their Bandcamp in the coming days. While lead track “Submarine” was a lo-fi, slow burner, this new one kicks it up a level and gives a good indication of how the rest of the release will build itself out."
Corin Tucker Band
'Kill My Blues'
Kill Rock Stars, 2012
Note: Song source KEXP says: "The opening track on Kill My Blues, “Groundhog Day” is a sharply-edged tune that laments what the Olympia-native perceives as the lack of progression of society. Singing, “What? Is it so?/Tell me something. Are we living in slow-mo?”, Tucker’s voice rides her bandmates’ riotous rhythm to produce a hurricane of a track that’s just as convicting, energizing, and hummable as anything from One Beat. Blisteringly fierce, “Groundhog Day” is direct, raw, and overflowing with unbridled passion. (In other words, it’s classic Corin Tucker.)"
